Summertime Protective Styles

Summer is in full swing and- it is hot. One thing that I don't want to have to worry about in this heat is my hair; how hot it makes me, sweating out my style, looking like a hot mess -literally, so the best thing for me and my hair right now is protective styling.

I've noticed that my hair grows faster in the heat, I'm not sure if my cuticles are more open or because I often manipulate my hair less in the summer, either way, I want it to continue and so I keep up with my summer natural hair routine which is to style my hair in protective styles. One of my favorite go-to protective styles last year was a high puff, but lately, I've been wanting to see less of my hair so I simply braid it and twist it up.

Most of the time when women mention protective styles they automatically assume hair wears, synthetic braids and twists, and wigs. Well, for me it's about styling my own hair and finding unique styles that I can do without adding hair. I don't like the idea that I have to add hair in order for a style to look glamorous or attractive. I'm having fun being creative with different looks I can achieve with my own hair.

Protective hairstyles are a great way to keep your hair healthy and styled during the summer months. With the heat and humidity, it can be challenging to maintain your hair’s health and appearance. Protective styles are low maintenance and can help protect your hair from the damaging effects of the sun, chlorine, and saltwater. Here are a few summertime protective styles to consider:

  1. Braids: Braids are a classic protective hairstyle that is perfect for summer. They are versatile and can be worn in many different styles, including cornrows, box braids, and Senegalese twists. Braids keep your hair out of your face and protected from the sun.
  2. Buns: Buns are an easy and classic protective style that works well for all hair types and lengths. You can wear a high or low bun, add braids or twists, or accessorize with hairpins or scarves.
  3. Headwraps: Headwraps are a stylish and practical way to protect your hair from the sun and keep it off your face. You can wear a headwrap in a variety of styles, including turban, bandana, or headscarf.                                   Remember, protective styles are meant to protect your hair, so try to avoid styles that are too tight or pull on your hairline. Be sure to moisturize your hair regularly and use a silk scarf or pillowcase to prevent breakage. Enjoy your summer with healthy, beautiful hair!
